“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed (Limmud)tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary… He wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed (Limmud).” (Isaiah 50:4)
When we hear the word ‘scholar,’ we imagine an intellectual who has accumulated vast knowledge. However, the original Hebrew word ‘Limmud,’ translated as the learned or the well-instructed, carries a much deeper resonance. Derived from ‘Lamad,’ meaning ‘to goad to train or to accustom, Limmud refers to someone who has been thoroughly ‘tamed’ through the training and discipline of God’s hand.
The identity of a Limmud begins with the ‘ear’ rather than the tongue. Scripture says that God wakens the ear morning by morning to listen like a Limmud. While a wild horse ignores its master’s voice, a well-tamed horse responds to even the slightest signal.
A true Limmud does not boast of their knowledge. Instead, they are the ones who listen intently to the delicate voice of the Creator each morning, sensing where His heart is moving. Being tamed by God means our stubborn ego is chipped away, and the void is filled with the Master’s will—a process of holy obedience.
Why does God tame us as Limmud? It is not merely to turn us into obedient machines. The purpose is clear to know the word that sustains the weary.
Only those who have been tamed by God through their own suffering can truly understand the pain of others. The words from the tongue of a Limmud are not fancy logic. They are languages of life and warm comfort that have matured through years of being guided by God, touching the souls of the wounded.
We live our lives tamed by countless worldly teachings and values often by the logic of money, the gaze of others, or our own stubborn experiences. But the Bible offers us a new identity, Limmud.
If you are facing incomprehensible trials today they might be the delicate touch of the Creator shaping you into a Limmud. When we lay down our wild nature and allow ourselves to be softly tamed by His hand, we finally gain the instructed tongue that saves others. Open your ears today. The whisper of the Master directed toward you has already begun.
