El Roi (אל ראי): The God Who Sees Me

“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me (El Roi)…'” (Genesis 16:13)

In the journey of life, wilderness-like trials often arrive without warning. Like Hagar, there are times when we are pushed out of the familiar fences of our daily lives, standing alone in a desolate desert. In the midst of that loneliness, where no help is expected and even our own sense of existence begins to fade, we finally encounter a magnificent name: El Roi, the God who sees me.

When we quietly meditate on the Hebrew word ‘Roi’ (ראי)—meaning to see or to look after—we find ourselves falling into the depths of God’s endless love. For God to ‘see’ us is not merely a visual observation. When His gaze rests upon us, it means His thoughts are fixed on us. While the world regarded Hagar as a nameless servant and easily erased her from its memory, she was never once erased from God’s thoughts. Thus, the fact that God sees me is a living promise that all of His heart and plans are being poured out toward me as an individual.

There is power in God’s gaze. He is not a distant observer watching us from afar. The Bible testifies that El Roi not only watches us closely but also stretches out His mighty hand of power to the very place where His gaze rests. Even when the sandstorms of the wilderness howl and we are surrounded by a darkness where we cannot see an inch ahead, God finds the way forward on our behalf. His gaze is like the eye of a Shepherd who holds us, examines us, and raises us up again. Just as He was the first to find Hagar as she sat in despair and led her to a spring of water, God’s watchful eye always leads to a saving hand.

In Hebrew, the suffix of ‘El Roi’ carries the deeply personal meaning of ‘my.’ Therefore, El Roi is not a universal observer but ‘my God who sees me.’ It is a meticulous love where the Ruler of the vast universe does not hesitate to stoop down to meet the eyes of a small, seemingly insignificant person like me.

Just as a single streetlight illuminates a dark alley, God’s gaze remains steadfastly fixed on us even in places where the world’s attention has flickered out. That light is not a cold eye of surveillance looking for our faults. Rather, it is a gaze of love whispering, “I see you, therefore you are still precious.” The beginning of our walk with Him starts with this meeting of eyes. When we are certain that God is looking at us, we can finally break free from the prison of others’ opinions and step forward in rhythm with Him.

Even if our lives are currently on a wilderness path and the darkness ahead makes it impossible to see, this is why we do not despair: our lives have never once drifted out of God’s sight. God’s whole heart is directed toward us. Wherever His gaze rests, His right arm is already holding our lives firm. Therefore, even at this very moment, we continue our safest and warmest journey within the gaze of El Roi. And one day, when we pass through the way of the cross and stand before His presence, we will see the face of God welcoming us with a radiant smile, saying, “I never once lost sight of you. I was with you and have led you here.”
