Judges 9:1-21
Gideon declared, “The Lord will rule over you,” refusing to exalt himself. Yet after his death, Abimelech, like a bramble, pierced his brothers and crowned himself, leading the community to ruin. Jotham’s parable reveals the truth: the olive, fig, and vine refused to reign to keep producing fruit that honors God and man. Only the useless bramble sought power, eventually becoming a fire that consumed everyone.
Today, we exist within national, social, and faith communities. We must deeply reflect on the role of the Church within society. Sadly, the modern Church has become an object of mockery, acting like a bramble rather than providing shade. A bramble lacks fruit and shade, yet craves power, threatening the entire community.
My role within the faith community is directly linked to this. Am I like the olive, producing oil that honors God, or the fig and vine, providing sweetness and joy? Or am I like the bramble, longing for self-exaltation and spreading harmful influence? The social role of our faith community is determined by my spiritual state.
We must pray for the Church, but we cannot stop at prayer. We must repent of thorny desires and live as trees that benefit both God and people. When I become a believer who exerts a good influence, the Church will finally stop being a piercing bramble and become a forest of life where weary souls find rest.
