The Unexpected Instrument of Victory

Judges 4:11-24

Sisera’s army, with nine hundred iron chariots, seemed invincible, but they crumbled instantly when God moved. Sisera, the commander fleeing for his life, arrived at the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. When Barak hesitated and missed his glory, God had already prepared an ordinary woman named Jael. She comforted the enemy commander with milk, then drove a tent peg through his temple, bringing a definitive end to the war.

This passage teaches us the solemn truth: “God chooses the protagonist of His glory.” While the commander Barak set conditions and hesitated, Jael, a foreigner and a woman, boldly committed herself when the decisive moment arrived. God completes His history not through mighty armies or those with grand conditions, but through those who respond immediately to His timing, however weak they may seem.

Sometimes we think a task cannot be done without us, or we shrink back, wondering what someone as inadequate as ourselves could possibly do. Yet, God chose Jael, who held only the mundane tools of a tent peg and a hammer. He showed us that even without grand weapons or high status, being held in the Lord’s hand makes one the most powerful instrument of victory.

Today, I humbly kneel once more. Even if my daily life seems insignificant, I desire to be a “prepared Jael” who does not miss the opportunities God provides. Confessing that victory lies not in human plans but in the Lord God alone, I resolve to treasure the small tent peg (today’s mission) in my hand and live faithfully.
