Judges 6:11-24
While Gideon was secretly threshing wheat in a winepress to hide from the Midianites, the angel of the Lord appeared and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” Gideon was bewildered. The situation was dire, and he was the least in his family. He tried to decline God’s call based on his weakness, asking, “How can I save Israel?”
However, God’s response was definitive: “I will be with you.” God’s interest did not lie in Gideon’s skills or background. The promise that “the Lord is with you” was the only condition that transformed Gideon into a warrior. After seeing the sign of his offering being consumed by fire on the rock, Gideon finally cast off his fear and confessed, “Yahweh Shalom (The Lord is Peace).”
We often define ourselves as “cowards in the winepress,” trapped by the walls of our circumstances. We hide behind excuses like “I have nothing” or “I am inadequate.” But God does not call us according to our current state; He calls us according to our true essence—who we become when He is with us. God’s vision of us is more accurate than our own.
Through what eyes am I looking at myself today? Am I ignoring God’s call because I am overwhelmed by my smallness and difficult environment? True peace (Shalom) does not come from improved circumstances, but from resting in the embrace of the Lord who calls us “mighty warriors.” I hope to be ‘God’s warrior’ today, trusting in His presence rather than my strength and standing firm in the place He has assigned to me.
