Ichabod(אִיכָבוֹד): Where the Glory Departs

‘Jeshurun(יְשֻׁרוּן)’ is the blessed name of a people dwelling within God’s presence, ‘Ichabod(אִיכָבוֹד)’ is a name that starkly reveals the tragedy of a life without it. Originating from 1 Samuel 4, this name is a dreadful proclamation: “The glory has departed from Israel.” Given to a child born amidst the disaster of the captured Ark and the downfall of a family, this name warns us of how vain prosperity and victory are without God.

The tragedy of Ichabod began when Israel reduced God to a mere tool for escaping crisis rather than seeking intimacy within a personal relationship. They marched into battle wielding the Ark as a symbol, yet without any restoration of a holy life. The result was a devastating defeat. This shows that while the forms of faith remained, the core the presence of God had vanished. This is, in fact, the most spiritually dangerous moment. The void left by God’s absence is a vast emptiness that no human means or methods can ever fill.

This tragic name forces us to realize whether God’s presence still dwells within today’s churches and our own lives. The lives of churches and believers devoid of His presence are manifesting as disastrous results throughout society today. Having lost the role of light and salt, only secularized religious forms remain, and the world mocks the church as ‘Ichabod,’ turning its back on us. When human desire and power occupy the space where God’s glory once stood, we are confronted with the painful reality of communal division and moral decay.

Therefore, we must once again cultivate ourselves as a dwelling place for God’s glory. We must rely on Jesus Christ, the Glory who once departed but returned to dwell among us in the flesh. Our task now is to cherish that holy presence within us above all else and to live a life of fellowship with Him through humility and obedience, ensuring that His glory never departs again.
