The Word is Not a Decoration, But Your Life

“He said to them, Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life…(Deut. 32:46-47)”

How can I engrave the Word of God upon the center of my heart? Even at the threshold of death, Moses desperately emphasizes this to the Israelites once again: Do not let God’s words merely pass through your ears, but “take them to heart.” To take the Word to heart means to make it the most vital value and the guiding principle of my life.

Engraving the Word is not about complex techniques; it depends on the attitude with which I approach it. Moses declares that these are by no means “idle words.” It is my “life” itself. Just as I cannot survive without breathing, my soul withers away if the Word does not flow within me.

Today, I resolve to hold onto the Word of God as my lifeline. I will engrave the Word upon my heart by stopping to remember it when my thoughts try to rush ahead, and by boldly declaring its promises when fear strikes. I want to carefully carve only the Lord’s Word onto the tablet of my heart so that it is not scratched by the noise of the world. I earnestly pray that the one verse given to me today becomes the breath that sustains me and the very reason for every step I take.
