“Barak said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go. Certainly I will go with you,” said Deborah. “But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh(Judg4:8-9)”
God decided to deliver the army of Jabin, king of Canaan, into the hands of Barak. However, when called, Barak set a “condition” on God’s promise: he would only go if the prophetess Deborah went with him. Although the battle ended in victory, the glory did not belong to Barak, but to Deborah (and eventually Jael). One can’t help but wonder—if Barak had obeyed immediately without any conditions, how much greater his portion of glory would have been.
Yet, there is another remarkable heart to observe here: Deborah’s. Instead of rebuking Barak for his weakness, she chose to cooperate with his request. Deborah’s willingness to empower someone else and help them move forward is a defining characteristic of the kind of person God is looking for.
We often long for the spotlight and desire to be the protagonist in every story. However, God seeks those who understand the “joy of partnership”—those who find fulfillment in seeing others lifted up through them. Just as Deborah filled Barak’s gaps and walked with him to the place of victory, being a supportive staff for someone else’s trembling footsteps is the most beautiful form of obedience.
Today, rather than shining as the main character, I resolve to be a humble soul who empowers the coworkers beside me. Lord, I do not need to be center stage. Let me be a “holy helper” who enables others to fulfill Your work, living as the one person You truly seek today.
