Grace in Presence, More Precious Than the Land

Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Moses never set foot in the Promised Land he had longed for all his life. Instead, he stood atop Mount Nebo and gazed at the land from afar as the Lord showed it to him. Scripture evaluates Moses by stating that no prophet like him has risen since, describing him as the one “whom the Lord knew face to face.” His greatness did not lie in the destination he reached, but in the deep and intimate fellowship he shared with God throughout the journey.

I am currently waiting for my own next step. While Moses at least saw the land with his eyes from a distance, my reality offers no such view. Everything is obscured by a fog, leaving the path ahead and the reason for staying here equally faint. Whenever the urgency of “When will I see my land?” shakes my heart, Moses’ final moments pose a question: “Is it the Promised Land you seek, or the God who promised it?”

The destination was not the core essence. The reason Moses could endure forty years in the wilderness and remain at peace even when denied entry into the land was his intimacy with God. This time of waiting, when no next step is visible, might be a precious opportunity to enjoy intimacy with Him.

Therefore, today, I choose to seek the face of the Lord who is beside me and abide in intimacy with Him. A greater blessing than entering the Promised Land is walking face to face with the God who leads me there. Although the mist remains thick, I am already on the safest path because the Lord, who knows me face to face, is holding my hand.
